As far back as 1874 Chris Smith built his first boat with his brother. This simple act was the beginning of what would become a legendary career for the Smith brothers and family. They opened a boat building operation in a small boathouse along the shores of Algonac, Michigan. Eventually gaining the attention of a financial backer John Ryan they formed Smith-Ryan Boat Company with their eyes devoted towards racing. The high-speed lifestyle of Ryan eventually led to financial issues, and they dissolved their partnership. Following another attempt at a partnership Smith eventually returned to a family-based partnership when they purchased 20 acres of waterfront land in Algonac and formed Chris Smith & Sons. In 1925 the Smith’s produced 111 boats in that single year. All boats built by the Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company were to be known as Chris-Crafts. In 1926 the Smith’s began to establish their dealership network. Smith turned to Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation to provide engines for a portion of his boats. The Chrysler Imperial marine engine was developed for the Chris-Craft boats to help streamline components to the benefit of their customers. The early 1930’s saw a streamlining, but production continued.

This 25' Custom 306 Runabout triple cockpit features a windshield, a 6-gauge instrument panel, a banjo steering wheel, double hatches and bear claw vents is being returned to the collector market following years of anonymity. Her original Chrysler Mariner Engine was removed, pickled and stored in an environmentally friendly atmosphere and palletized and replaced with a 350 CID to speed her up. However, both engines will be conveyed at the time of sale.

The entire boat has been stored in a climate-controlled storage structure and has been expertly maintained over the years. This represents a unique opportunity for an avid collector to add this piece of history to their collection.

Engines

The 306 Model was offered by Chris-Craft with both a standard In-Line 6 Cylinder and an optional Straight 8 Cylinder. This vessel has the UPGRADE Straight Eight (8) Cylinder making her a truly rare find. Roughly 40 plus years ago a plan was devised to ship the boat to Lake Tahoe and her owner wanted to beef up the horsepower for her new home and replaced the Chrysler Marine Straight 8 with a GM Chevy 350 CID small block. There were approximately 2 hours put on this brand new Chevy Small Block motor for the purposes of a sea trial and the boat was winterized and stored in preparation for the journey to Lake Tahoe. The Chrysler Marine Straight Eight (8) was prepped for long term storage by her extremely knowledgeable owner, palletized and stored in his climate controlled storage facility where it has remained to this day. No modifications were made to the boat itself other than a slightly different length drive shaft. The boat will be sold with both engines.

Dual Axle Trailer

Included is the Karavan dual axle trailer which has just completed her scheduled maintenance with new bearings and all new tires.

Value Statement

A 1932 Chris Craft 25 Runabout equipped with a Straight 8 Cylinder Chrysler engine is a rare boat. Chris Craft offered the 25 Runabout with both a standard In-Line 6 Cylinder and an optional Straight 8 Cylinder. However, the Straight 8 was a more expensive option, and fewer boats were ordered with this engine.

It is difficult to say exactly how rare a 1932 Chris Craft 25 Runabout with a Straight 8 Cylinder Chrysler engine is, but it is estimated that only a few hundred of these boats were built.

The value of a 1932 Chris Craft 25 Runabout with a Straight 8 Cylinder Chrysler engine will vary depending on its condition, restoration level, and other factors. However, a well-maintained and restored example can sell for between $100,000 to $200,000 or more.

The rarity of the Straight 8 engine and the fact that it is a desirable option for this model boat add to its value. Additionally, Chris Craft boats are well-respected for their quality and craftsmanship, which also contributes to their high value.

If you are considering buying or selling a 1932 Chris Craft 25 Runabout with a Straight 8 Cylinder Chrysler engine, it is important to have the boat appraised by a qualified marine surveyor. This will help you to determine the boat's fair market value.
